The great white buffalo. We hear whispers of it when we're kids growing up in Montana, but I'm not sure that any of us really knew what it meant. A white buffalo is a 1 in 10 million occurrence at the bare minimum. With today's decimated herds those odds are even greater. From what I've found, the white buffalo represents many things to native culture. Most importantly it represents a prophecy of good fortune. The legend starts with two young hunters out looking for game, when they come across a beautiful woman clad in white buckskin. One of the hunters recognizes the woman as a sacred being an averts his eyes, while the other does not. Instead, the other approaches the White Buffalo Calf Woman with lust in his heart, and after she beckons him to her, he is turned to dust and bones. To the young hunter that averted his eyes and honored her, she bid him to go back to his people and prepare for her coming. When the White Buffalo Calf Woman arrives at the hunters tribe, she brings with her the prayer pipe, and she teaches his people seven ways to pray. It is through ceremony these prayers include: Purification through the Sweat Lodge; the Naming Ceremony for naming children; the Healing Ceremony to restore health and vigor to the body, mind and spirit; the adoption ceremony for making of relatives; the marriage ceremony for uniting male and female; the Vision Quest for communing with the Creator for direction and answers to one's life; and the Sundance Ceremony to pray for the well-being of all the People.
